Chan Tai

Chan Tai's story, Mrs. Chan.

Mrs. Chan's son was called Beng-gon – “Biscuit”. Sadly, he never dealt with his drug problem, but I was worried about his mother. And I said, "Can I visit her?"

"No, she worships idols." He didn't want me to visit her. Actually, it was because he used to take all the money she had for his own drugs.

She sold herbs in the market and got about HK$10 a day, but she had no license. So she either had to go to court when she was arrested by Hawker Control, or she had to pay a bribe. Later, when I got to know her, I said, "Which was more expensive: paying the bribe or going to court?" She said money was the same, but it was less problem to pay the bribe—didn't have to go to court.

Anyway, one day Beng-gon "Biscuit" got arrested. She couldn't travel on a bus—she got sick—so I found out where she lived and went to see her. Up a little staircase on floor six or seven in the Walled City. Nothing in her house really except a bed, and I found her dying. I had taken another brother with me, and she had no son, no income, and nothing to live for. So she decided to lie in bed with her bad, bad chest, and stay there until she died.

So I said, "Mrs. Chan, could I pray for you?" She said fearfully, "What do I have to do?" I said, "Oh, you don't have to do anything. I'm going to pray in Jesus' name, and He'll come." "All right," she said, and closed her eyes.

And Jesus did come. As I prayed for her, she began to breathe deeply and began to smile. And then she said, "Oh, my chest feels really light." And I said, "Oh, that's because Jesus is God's Son. And He was down here 2,000 years ago, and He's touched you." And then I went on praying for her. And she said, "Oh, I feel very light." And I said, "Will you believe in Him? Because He took all your pain and all your worry, and all the things you feel bad about, and put them on Himself when He died on a cross." "Yes," she said—not understanding, but "Yes, I will." And I said, "And after three days He rose again. Will you believe?" "Yes," she said.

And at the end of 5, 10 minutes, her chest was completely healed, and we gave her Brand’s chicken essence, and then we boiled some bones—me and my friend—so she could have some nourishment.

After a few days, I came to visit her again. "Well," she said, "I have to be baptized." And I said, "What? Why?" She said, "Well, the other night I was watching the TV"—and she had a 29-inch TV, but it didn't work, and the electrics in the Walled City were mostly stolen and not reliable—"but she was watching the TV." She said, "A few days ago I was watching, and this man walked across the screen. And then he was walking up a beautiful mountain, he had a long white robe, and there were beautiful flowers. And he held out his hand to me and he said, 'Mrs. Chan, will you follow me?'" And Mrs. Chan said, "Yes, Lord, I will." And Jesus said, "Be baptized!"

So that was how she began her new life. And she'd thrown all her idols out. "Well," she said, "they never cared about me and my son, did they?"

And then she used to come to my apartment, which was just outside the Walled City, where I had quite a few young boys who'd been in prison staying with me. And she'd wash the floor and make toast and marmalade. She picked up anything I'd left on the floor and washed it. She was happy. She'd got a family. She'd got toast and marmalade and Jesus.

That's... and she became my Kai Ma—my godmother.
