Lau Leung
Here is Lau Leung’s story. I'm doing it in two parts because I hope it will not be cut short. It's such a good story.
A young man came to me once and said, "I'm trying to lead my brother to Christ, but he doesn't want to hear."
And I said, "You're very rude," because his brother, Lau Leung, was sleeping in the streets and couldn't read, so he didn't want the Bible that his brother handed to him. I said, "Let's invite him to tea. That's a better idea."
I chose a really nice restaurant to shock the waiters, and took a fat uncle with me who'd formerly been a policeman. We sat in the restaurant, and in came Lau Leung, looking awful. He'd got sores all over his body which were weeping wetness.
But this thin Lau Leung looked at the fat uncle sitting by me. They both pointed at each other and said, "Nei (你)? You?" And it turned out they'd been in prison together for drugs, which my policeman uncle started taking drugs when he took the drugs of the people he'd arrested.
And then thin uncle says to fat uncle, "Why are you so fat? Dim gai nei gum fei (點解你咁肥)?"
And fat uncle says, "Oh, it's Jesus."
And Lau Leung said, "I'll have Him!"
So we said, "Okay, we'll introduce you to Him." He had no idea who Jesus was, but he sat next to me with the teapot in between, and I asked the Holy Spirit to speak to him, and I prayed quietly. Then he began to smile, and I said, "How are you feeling, Lau Leung?"
And he said, "Oh, very comfortable."
And I said, "That's because Jesus is the Son of God. Will you believe that?"
"Yes," he said. He has no idea, but he wants a Jesus that makes people fat, because drug addicts don't get fat; they spend all their money on drugs, and they don't eat.
I prayed quietly for another 30 seconds. Then he was breathing very deeply, and I said, "Well, how are you feeling, Lau Leung?"
He said, "Ngoh ho heng ah (我好輕呀), I feel very light."
And I said, "That's because Jesus was down here 2,000 years ago, and He put all the things that make you feel bad that you've done, and all the bad things that people have done to you—He put them all on Himself. Will you believe that He died for you?"
"Yes," says Lau Leung, having no idea. But I could have said, "Do you believe He's got a white beard and a red cloak?" and he would have said yes, because he wanted the One that had saved his friend.
So after another 30 seconds, I said, "Now, will you believe that Jesus rose again?"
"Yes," he said. "Silly question, I've just met Him."
I said, "Would you like to follow Him?"
"Yes," he said.
I said, "He'll give you a new life, so tell Him all the things you feel bad about. Ask Him to forgive you and make you new, and He'll give you His Holy Spirit and a new language." And he began to speak in tongues as we prayed over the teapot.
The whole thing took about two minutes. There we were having tea, and we'd got a new Lau Leung.
Then I said to him, as we began to drink the tea, "Now Lau Leung, how many previous convictions have you had?"
He said, "78, and..." and then he clapped his shoulder with his hand, "...next time, 79."
It happened to be he was arrested that night. But he did, after two months in prison, come to stay with us, and he truly did begin a new life. He was always the first on his feet to worship. He used to run around the football field every day. He was always first in worship.
That is the beginning of Lau Leung's story.
After a few months of staying with us, I said to Lau Leung, "Lau Leung, why are your toenails so long?" They were two or three inches.
And he said, "I need them to gouge people within the night!"
"Oh," I said. "Of course you do."
You see, he wasn't a very good street sleeper. I mean, some people are very good at their little cardboard nests and they've got all their possessions neatly stacked. But he just had a whole lot of odd plastic bags which people were always stealing. That's why it was so easy for him to be arrested by the police. He said he'd done about half of the crimes he was arrested for. Nobody would believe him if drugs were planted on him, so he was such a target for people who wanted to steal his belongings, and for the police.
Of course he needed long toenails! You see, he trusted me, and he trusted Jesus, but he didn't trust the other men that were living with us—quite right, because they were "in progress," so to speak.
A few months later, his toenails were cut. And I looked at him and thought, Dear Lau Leung, you have come such a long way. I'm sure I've got toenails that other people can see which I've not yet cut.
He got cancer, and he came to me one day, and he said, "The doctors say there's no hope for me. I'm putting all my hope in my Jesus." And he said, "Sometimes at night I can't sleep, and Jesus comes into my room." We were living in tin huts in Hang Fook Camp. And he said, "Jesus comes into my room, and He sits on my bed, and we spend all night talking about you!"
And I thought, Wow, I don't know anyone that's got a private intercessor like me!
And I so miss him. Now he's gone to be with Jesus. But I'll see him again.
